2026-2027 Transportation Eligibility

A student is eligible for transportation under the Education Act if the address provided is at least 1.6 km from their designated school (grade 6 or lower) and at least 2 km from their designated school (grade 7 or higher). Eligibility is determined by the shortest driving distance, as set out in section 4 of the School Transportation Regulation.

Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, ECSD will no longer approve new transportation registrations for students living within Alberta Education's funded distance criteria. As a result, we cannot provide transportation to a newly registered sibling who does not meet the eligibility criteria, even if another child in the family is receiving grandfathered service.

While we appreciate that this may be challenging for families, applying the criteria consistently is necessary to manage rising transportation costs and ensure funding remains focused on classroom supports. Existing grandfathered riders will continue to receive service at this time, but no new exceptions are being approved.

Winter Weather Reminders

  • Our transportation system has an excellent record for service; however, given the possible extremes of Edmonton weather and the potential for unexpected mechanical difficulties, it is impossible to guarantee buses will run on time or at all. A route can take significantly longer in adverse weather conditions.
  • If weather delays or cancellations happen, we will notify families as soon as we become aware. You are encouraged to monitor and subscribe to notifications through the BusPlanner Delays App.
  • Please ensure children are supervised at the bus stop, have alternate arrangements should the bus be significantly delayed, and are dressed appropriately to withstand the weather.

Edmonton Catholic Schools contracts with various Yellow School Carriers to ensure safe and efficient yellow bus service for more than 12,000 students every school day. As one of the largest school divisions in the province, ECSD recognizes that reliable transportation is essential for students to access education.

To ensure the utmost safety of students, the contracted carriers must adhere to rigorous standards and regulations. These requirements include driver qualifications, vehicle maintenance, safety inspections, and adherence to traffic rules and regulations. We work closely with contracted Yellow Bus Carriers to monitor and enforce these standards, ensuring that the transportation service is reliable and safe.
